MOSHEH´S HEART OR THE HEART OF KORAKH?

PARASHAH'S COMMENTARY
MOSHE'S AND KORAKH'S HEART

Ba Midbár/In the desert/Numbers 16:1-3: “Now Korach the son of Yitz´har, the son of K´hat, the son of Levi, along with Datan and Aviran, the  sons of Eli´av, and On, the son of Pelet, descendants of Re´uven, took men and rebelled against Mosheh. Siding with them were 250 of Isra´el, leaders of the community, key members of the council, men of reputation. They assembled themselves against Moshe and Aharon…”

This parashah talks to us about the two kinds of opposite hearts which exist in the world: Moshe's kind of heart; and the type of heart like Korakh.

The fact that Mosheh and his brother Aaron had prostrated over their faces to beg Elohim, instead of taking the easy way, which was the one that Korakh and the ones who had followed him in rebellion against Moshe´s authority, and, thus, over Elohim´s authority: to argue, shout, yell, to begin a battle of words without an end in sight, reveals us their characters.

Beside the fact that Moshe and Korakh are two characters  in the  history of Israel, we can also perceive them as two prototypes of two different life styles an even of two types of nations, as we shall see. Mosheh, as the Torah says, was Israel´s humblest man. Unpretensious, without believing  himself to be somebody important, without any pride at all, exhibited an enormous interior calm/shal/VAH and an enormous dependency from Elohim, thanks to his lack of self pride, all of those, characteristics of a leader of Elohim, those who Elohim seeks for and likes.

Korakh, on the contrary, was the complete opposite, judging from his deeds: impetuous, full of pride, ambitious of having personal fame, of being noted, independent of mood and of will, quarrelsome, revolutionary, full of nervous energy against the delegated authority of Elohim, which was Mosheh, was everything ha satan admires in a man. We cannot find, perhaps, regarding to character, any two man who are more dissimilar in the Tanakh. The inner calm/shal/VAH versus the lack of inner calm; two antagonical principles, both in men as in nations.

Moshe´s shal/VAH is born of his humility, of his not thinking himself as someone important. The person that achieves this level of humility, this opinion of himself, does not search the light, does not look for standing out over the rest, but leaves—for those who are with Elohim—that He be the one who manages his life, be it by standing him out, as He made Mosheh to stand out as leader of all Israel, or leaving him in the obscurity of anonymity. From this attitude vis-à-vis daily life and its events, comes out shal/VAH, i.e. interior calm, shalom and the lack of anxiety which all of  us desire for our so agitated life if this 21th century. This does not mean that neither Mosheh, nor those who are like Mosheh do not have problems, nor causes to be nervous, or anxious. There are always causes and there will always be. What count is how we REACT to them. This reaction is part of an effort from our will and from our character, according to h how we mold it. We become like this as an effort of our will and with the enormous help of prayer and of Elohim, who is at our right side. A part of this help is to realize and to act with this realization that it is not in our hands to resolve most of our daily problems which appear during the day, but in the hands of Elohim. Since this is so, why worry?

Why try to stand out and make ourselves aware so that others see us, if we  have WHO could do it for  us and WHO can solve our problems? An extreme example of this shal/VAH/inner calm is present in Yeshua when He was navigating with His talmidim/followers and the wind started to blow and the talmidim begun to be afraid that the little boat would sink. However, do you remember what Yeshua did? He continued to sleep in the boat! This is an-extreme—example of a shal/VAH which is born of a trust that our lives and our security is in the hands of Elohim and not in ours.

Are you having at present a grave problem in your life? Maybe an urgent decision or an important one that does not allow you to sleep at night? A family problem that worries  you? Remember Mosheh. Pray to have the shal/VAH that Mosheh had and his dependence in the Power/Gvu/RAH and the control of Elohim over His life. Prayer can change your life and your character, if you are the nervious type and those who are anxious for the future, and for what will come. Ask in prayer that Elohim give you the humility and the dependence in Him, who Mosheh  had, so that you relax, together with Yeshua, and wait for Him, without having to fight on  your own. At the very center of humility and trust/bita/KHON in Elohim is the inner calmness which we all aspire but do not achieve.

The word “shalom/interior peace” comes from “sha/LEM”, which means “complete, perfect.” Peace is not absence  of war: there are nations which are not at war—yet—but between themselves there is neither peace. The “Sha/LEM” is that misses nothing, the complete thing. Elohim created a sha/LEM Universe, perfect, where everything combines with everything else, even though everything is different between themselves, and where exists harmony. An orchestra is a set of instruments which are all different from each other but play the same melody in total harmony: that is auditive shalom and that is why a certain type of music brings us shalom in our heart, because it already  has that shalom impregnated in the harmony of the execution and of its sound. 

A sentence we can adopt for our daily life to calm ourselves inside is: “I put this problem (say it aloud) in the hands of the All Power Elohim and Yeshua ha Mashiach. May Your will be done and not mine. Give me what You have to give me and not what I want.” After praying that, BELIEVE IT, and do not continue doing your own as if you never had prayed for that.  BELIEVE IT! Do not keep doing your “thing” like  you would have never done this, BELIEVE! Trust that Elohim heard you and will act according to your order. Trust in Him. LEARN to rest in Him.

The other option is to be like Korakh: nervious, anxious, revolutionary, independent from Elohim, searching leadership, looking to be seen and heard, searching to be the leader of  your group—whatever it cost—and to Korakh it cost him that the earth swallowed him, him and his revolutionary followers which rebelled against the delegated authority in Mosheh. Rebellion against authority is the principle of ha satan and we have to escape from it if  we do not wish to terminate as Korakh and his buddies.

Israel is the country of Elohim and is the one in charge of transmit this message to the world, of being the Mosheh of the nations, the humblest of the nations, the most insignificant, the least pretentious. Korakh represents all of the rest of the nations of the world, trying to stand out over the rest of them, trying to impose HIS will over his neighbouring nations through force and coercion.

This posture and this election of Mosheh reveals to us that he was marked by four fundamental features of character, which made him to be chosen by Elohim to lead His People: (1) his extreme humbleness; (2) his submission to ADONAI´s will; (3) his humility before the rest of them; and (4) his spirit of fear of Adonai (RUACH IR’AT ADONAI). These four character features reflect the type of  heart reflect the type of  heart Mosheh had and we need to acquire from Elohim, if we wish to service Him as worshipping slaves/ov/Dim as we have to be before Him, as says Rom 1:1: “SHA/ul, worshipping slave/ov/ED of Elohim…”

Humility shows us what we really are in front of the Creator of the Universe: nothing; dust (ada/MAH), from where the name “Adam” comes, whose final destiny is the same dust of the earth from where we came primordially. (Humility is not the same as “inferiority complex”: this last is regarding the people that surrounds us, and is harmful to have it, and we need to heal from it.) Humility refers to our self-concept regarding Elohim and is very favorable to have it.

It says in MI/kha 6:8: “And…what ADONAI demands of you? No more than to act justly, love grace and walk in purity with your God.”

Humility is to understand in our heart, not only in our mind, that every ability we possess comes from Elohim and is not any merit of ours. He did it like this so that we can serve Him better. He that BELIEVES this in his heart, not in the flap of his coat, this one has true humbleness.

HOW TO GET TO HAVE HUMILITY, SUBMISSION, COMPASSION AND FEAR OF ADONAI

Our submission to the will of Adonai is going to do wonderous things regarding our humility. Doing His will instead of ours, naturally makes usw more humble, since we begin to see how what we wished, many times happens, without almost no effort at all from us (apart from praying intensely, of course) and how is the will of Adonai is the only thing which is going to become reality. Yeshua said in Yochanan/John 15:11: “I told you this so that my joy, sim/CHAH be within you and your sim/KHA be total, sha/LEM. Spiritual sim/KHA comes from being in the Presence of Elohim. He is sim/KHA; He is joy, O/sher, so, being at His feet every day not only brings us knowledge about Him, but gives us His joy. This is spiritual happiness, as we said in a recent parashah, which is different from the happiness of the body or the mind. Spiritual happiness is transmitted by His Ruakh when we are in His will and submitted to Him. Then it comes down to us His shalom and His shal/VAH (inner calm.)

There are several types of subjection which are necessary for us: subjection to Adonai. As in Jacob 4:7: “Get under (the order of) Elohim; resist  ha satan and he will flee from you.” (Almost always, this verse is quoted without the first (and key part): “Get under the order of Elohim).” If we do not do this, ha satan will NOT flee from us! We have to submit ourselves to our Messianic Rabbis (Heb. 13:7). We have to submit ourselves to the national authorities (1st P. 2:13.) We have to receive humiliation and evil given to  us with inner calm/shal/VAH (1st P. 3:8-17). This shal/VAH does not come automatically. It is cultivated many times with our tears, but it is our decision to act with shalvah each time we are being offended or insulted. By last, let us learn to forgive everyone—EVERY DAY. Matt 23:11. To conclude, we have to examine every week our heart to see how much of Korakh we have and to ask the heart and the mind of Yeshua within us, to be increasingly more like Him.

The WORLDWIDE MESSIANIC JUDAISM movement we are a part of, as the spirit of Israel it is, has a special function to accomplish at this time: to exhibit Mosheh´s character in its Messianic Leaders as well as in its Messianic leaders, as in their Synagogues as a whole: dependence from Elohim even to the minimum point; humility, inner shal/VAH, trust/bita/KHON/trust before the attacks of the enemy, ha satan and his human help, those who pray for our destruction and the Korakhs within our own synagogues, which have not understood  yet the message of the chain command. Our job is to be a testimony of bita/KHON/trust, and of shal/VAH/inner calm in front of the everyone´s attachs against us. Our task is not easy, but we must try to be like Mosheh and not like Korakh. All of this will have its rewards from Elohim, who sees everything. Nothing we say or do or do not wish to do, will be without reward or without punishment. Let us behave every minute of our life and with everyone that Elohim puts in our way as the true bnei Elohim/sons of Elohim we wish to become.
