There are two kinds of pilgrimage through the desert: one is without knowing Elohim, which is very hard and sometimes fatal, as not knowing him involves doing ANYTHING to survive unbound to His rules which sometimes, if not all the time, protect us from what may be deadly for us in this life or the next. And as someone that doesn't have Elohim with him, He's absolutely unaware of the existence of the afterlife and lacks all belief in it.
The other kind of pilgrimage is much much easier as we are being led by Him on our side, invisible and, as Dvarim words read above: "During forty years I'VE LED YOU THROUGH THE DESERT...". How did He lead them? By the hand? Yes, even though none of the Jews noticed His presence, He was there amongst them, that's why it reads "...I have led you...".
The desert is a metaphor of our earthly life. It's a place full of problems and difficulties, a place where you haven't the faintest idea of when or where a pair of wolves will jump out teeth shining, a place where you have no clue of where that venomous snake that threatens our lives staring deadly at us came from. There's a pack of dangerous wolves and venomous snakes in each and every one of our lives in case we haven't realized yet.
We should recount the things Elohim has done in our lives though our desert so far. What has Elohim done in YOUR life until this day? Take your time, especially in Shabbat, grab a notebook and write down a list of the things that a) Elohim has done in your life; b) The things He is DOING in your life right now; c) The things from which He saved you from; and d) How to THANK HIM for everything He has done so far and is still doing in your life.
The list should turn out quite long; the more wisdom you posses, the longer it should be, because wisdom is the needle pointing to our north regarding Elohim; wisdom makes us aware of Elohim's manifestation in our lives in everything we do and that of which He prevented us from doing, or almost doing by not knowing, or by almost falling into the enemy's traps. His guide is absolute, invisible but certainly present in the spiritual world.
WHAT ELOHIM DID FOR US
First of all, He led us to Him, The One and Only Elohim in the entire universe, given that there are millions if not billions of "gods", but only One Elohim of Israel, and we are a part of Israel, some by blood, some by faith and some by both. This is easily forgettable, or not taken into account, but it's an enormous blessing that very few people have and are aware of.
In second place, this Messianic Judaism automatically gives us the authentic identity and self-identity (that we're aware of being). We know and feel we're Messianic and Jewish, both things at the same time, because we have and believe in Ieshua, who offered His Blood for us.
In third place, we're still being constantly fed through the desert, which is our life, with heavenly food, when the majority of people can't find a single meal during their time through the desert. This nourishment is spiritual, mental and continuous. It's not a dish per year, nor per week but three meals PER DAY, constantly, fresh and tasty, like only Elohim can cook for us.
In fourth place, for those of us who are near Him, He teaches us how to fight our enemy ha satan and his army, so that we don't let ourselves be defeated by any bump or spiritual attack disguised of any other thing. Not only has He taught us how to fight, but to never surrender, to always get up and to punch back twice for every punch we get so that we may show our determination and might (through Elohim) to the enemy and to let them know they're not dealing with defenseless creatures, but soldiers of Elohim, well trained and armed to the teeth.
In fifth place, He taught us the value of the eternal life, that is not only composed of the few years we have on earth but the ETERNAL LIFE, the one we get to spend with Him, in an unending joy and happiness in the Gan Eden/Paradise, or in that other place of eternal torment and despair made for those who never paid attention to His warnings, callings and/or circumstances in their lives or directly never met Him. We must live in obedience and fear of Elohim, being careful of our thoughts, our words and especially of what we do because there's an IOU note for every one of our actions.
WHAT ELOHIM IS DOING FOR YOU
What is Elohim doing in our lives, for you, specifically? Aside from the above mentioned, He is giving values to our lives that we never had before. Like someone once said: "Life is a lot more than to be called meaningless". It's not meaningless if we have Him teaching us, guiding us, joining us, blessing us and our families, children, grand-children, great-grand-children, because of our determination of being with Him. Every single one of the members of our family is benefitted and blessed by our decision of being under His Talit, even if they don't notice it and maybe even never find out.
This is exactly what happens with the Jewish People in all of history: by the blessing of their forefathers, all of our people were tied to that blessing, are tied to that blessing and will continue to receive blessing for centuries and ages to come, in spite of the world's reluctance to admit it. With a population of the mere 0.2 percent, the Jews have received over the unbelievable amount of forty seven percent of Nobel Prizes, at least in 1987, a year that we held account for at least. How do you explain such disproportion? Simple. Elohim's blessings over His children, the heir of His People, by the merits of His Patriarchs and closest forefathers.
You, my dear brother in the Messiah, you ARE a Messianic Jew, that's why you're reading this parashah, you are injected in the Jewish Tree of Romans 11:17, therefore you are also Jewish to Elohim's eyes and worthy of the same blessings blood Jews are entitled to as well. This is another thing Elohim is doing in our lives.
What you should try to do is to learn Hebrew and ask for "idishe kop", a "Jewish mind", so that with it, you will see the world as only Jews see it and one that's with Elohim as well. It's not only another expression, but something far more valuable that Elohim is willing to give you so that you may see things the way He does, as His People do
As we've already established in the past parashot, Elohim wants to take you to meet and know His Torah (His "Rules and Laws of Engagement") so that He may transform you into a moral and ethical person and not into someone that hasn't a clue of what to do, and does anything, most of them good but some of them forbidden by Elohim. The idishe kop will bring your mind to an unveilment, a different mind and at the same time, the Torah will shape your behavior into one worthy of Elohim's son.
Knowing Hebrew will give you concepts of Elohim that you won't find in any other language, apart from making you understand the Renewed Covenant for the first time, according to the original Jewish culture and language, the Hebrew.
OF WHAT ELOHIM SAVED US UNNOTICED
Elohim has protected and saved us from countless things and events, the thing is we haven't even noticed it, He may not announce it, He may not tell us, but it is us who should begin to notice it naturally so that we may thank Him in our prayers and recognize that He is keeping us from harm and taking care of us constantly unnoticed.
There's an enormous amount of traps and strategies that ha satan has set up to harm us one way or another. Elohim works actively to dissolve or disappear some and most of them from our path so that we can live a better life.
Ha satan and his army has filled the world of sins in shape of concepts, conversations, opinions, rules of conduct and fashion that He disperses through the mass media and society, composed by our non-believer friends, co-workers or study mates, so that we may take the bait and fall for the sin-trap. These are the most subtle of them all, because when we're with friends, we think we're secure, safe from everything and that we're OK doing what they're doing even if they're not messianic Jewish or even non-believers.
These are very subtle situations that we fail to notice because we believe that it's OK to do what people that are around us every day do like co-workers, study mates, even our kids or grand-kids, but slowly but surely, without so much as a peep, we are infected with the world's concepts and habits, words and actions.
But most of His sons, the ones willing to follow Him and His Torah, are protected from such traps and subtle strategies and are showed the truth behind every concept, habit and fashion, apparently innocent and without spiritual value.
Aside from this very hidden and subtle part, there are things equally hidden but not that subtle from which He saves us from, which are accidents, diseases, and all kinds of problems (police, judicial, social, family), that most of us can't even see are being haunted on our daily basis, but that He, subtly, without us noticing it, removes it from our path so that it doesn't reach us. It is only when other people are touched by these problems, that we realize how much Elohim, our Aba/Dear Father, keeps us from harm and protects us from ailments without us realizing it.
HOW TO PROPERLY THANK ELOHIM
In the first place, we must understand the extension and amplitude of our gratitude towards Elohim for everything He did and continues to do for us, as we've been reading above. We must praise Him and bless His name for the amount of care He has for us, for the protection He grants us, from what He saved us from, for the traps and strategies ha satan puts against us and He sets aside for us. This should not be something we do every now and then, but we should remember every single day and realize of what He does for us and will continue to do, and thank Him and bless Him for His kindness and mercy for us, and understand how unworthy we are of His gifts.
In second place, we should become a living testimony that He is with us and us with Him. So that people may know and see that He lives within our tridimensional being. This "being a living testimony" means exactly that; acquire a character that agrees with someone that receive these blessings from Elohim and is therefore changed by Him and for Him and follows Him. This is the true testimony: our behavior, the words we choose to say and the actions we take in front of others
In third and last place, we must love Him with all of our soul and all of our "meod/effort" as instructed by His Torah, for everything He is doing, for everything He did and for everything He will do for us in the future.
We should thank Elohim for His mercy, given that "His mercy is forever/le olam va ed" and that mercy, in this case, is translated to care, and spiritual, mental and physical gifts to us, His children. The gifts that we can barely notice because we're all too busy "living our lives" in the world, not noticing His presence next to us.
